Project Abstract

                We demonstrated a fast mechanical wheel lapping technique to fabricate a convenient and low-cost side-polished fiber (SPF) with a rough, rather than smooth, polished surface. Such a bare SPF can be directly used to develop a promising sensing device, because a Mach-Zehnder interference pattern with high fringe contrast above 10 dB in transmission spectrum as achieved due to the macro scratches on the rough polished surface. Fabrication parameters, e.g., thickness of remaining fiber, polished length, and roughness of abrasive paper, were optimized.


        A wheel setup polishing set up was employed to fabricate a SPF (side polishing fibre). SPF is fitted to compact arrangements. Here the DC motor 1 is used to drive the grinding wheel with help of lead screw mechanism. The grinding wheel is mounted in fibre material requiring depth of grinding. After completing one cycle of movement in grinding wheel, the ultrasonic sensor will sensing the lead screw distance to pass signal the controller. The controller is guide the motor 2.  The bed is moved horizontally with help of rack and pinion arrangements driving by DC motor 2.  If the bed is moved requiring position then the controller is shut off motor 2 and also actuate the DC motor 1 for reverse motion activate in lead screw mechanism. This cycle is repeated regularly.

                The scratch sensor is located the top of the bed for finding or sensing the scratch the required finishing material. If the any scratches are finding the signal pass to the controller, the controller activates the DC motor 1 and also sprays system. If controller pass the direction command to motor 1, then the motor 1 activate grinding wheel to requiring places.
